About IBMS

The Institutes of Biology and Medical Sciences (IBMS) was founded in January 2010 as an independent research unit of Soochow University. With the combination of multiple model organisms and cutting-edge technologies, IBMS primarily focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of cancer, infectious diseases and other immune-related diseases, as well as developing novel diagnostic tools and prevention strategies.

The institute is directed by Sidong Xiong, president of Soochow University and Chair professor of IBMS. Currently, there are 51 faculty and staff in IBMS, including 11 principle investigators, 21 research associate professors and 19 technical or administrative staff. It also hosts 99 graduate students and 2 post-doctoral fellows. The research interests of the ten laboratories encompass the fields of infection immunity, glycoimmunology, developmental immunology, tumor immunology and autoimmune diseases, with special focus on mechanisms of immune recognition, immune response and immune regulation during pathogenesis.

The current space of IBMS laboratories is approximately 5000 m2, with SPF grade animal facilities, BSL-2L laboratory, molecular biology, cell culture, proteomics and imaging platforms. The institute is equipped with international standard research instruments including two-photon fluorescence microscopy, fluorescent cell sorter, confocal microscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography and quantitative PCR machines. For the convenience of the scientists, the institute also provided shared core facilities, discussion rooms and academic lecture halls with overseas multimedia communication devices installed. Its equipments and resources are among the best of domestic and international immunology laboratories. Meanwhile, the Institute established close collaboration programs with Fudan University, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Pasteur Institute.

IBMS is booming after several years of development, with steady increase in its research and education level to achieve the international standards. IBMS is on its way to become a leading interdisciplinary research institute in China with profound international influences.
